Pirmin Werner jumped second on the podium during the World Cup opener for ski acrobats. In Ruka, the 23-year-old from Zurich was defeated only by China’s Qi Guangpu, who was competing in his first match since winning the Beijing Olympics. The Swiss Olympic fourth place, who was rewarded with 119 points in the super final for his jump with three somersaults and five twists, fell just 0.91 points short of his fourth World Cup victory.
A year ago, Werner celebrated a Swiss double victory ahead of Noé Roth in northeastern Finland. This time, however, Roth’s start to the season completely failed. Ranked 28th in qualifying, last season’s world champion and overall World Cup winner clearly missed the final of the top 12.
