At the end of April the master bucket was lifted with Servette, seven months later it was languishing on the banks of Geneva. Marco Maurer plays no role in the short- and long-term planning of Geneva coach Jan Cadieux (43). After the temporary switch to SCB, the defender, whose contract expires at the end of the season, can at least play again.
The past few months have been difficult for Maurer. The 35-year-old finds it difficult to understand the situation. “I have doubts,” says the clearer, “the team didn’t know what was going on either.” There was no justification for his demotion to redundant status. “I play simply and physically, maybe that no longer fits in with the system,” he speculates. The fact that he’s in the lineup, sitting on the bench in full swing, but not getting a second of ice time, must be a huge humiliation, right? “I served for two months. “I felt like a junior,” is all he says.
The signing of ex-NHL player Tim Berni (23) in mid-October was an indication. Since then, Geneva’s defense has had nine defenders, two of whom are foreigners and young talents with a future. “You stand there as a veteran and you feel like you’re being fooled.” Maurer has held the bones for Servette for the past four seasons. The defender does not yet know what his future looks like. But he is still fit for a few more seasons.
That’s why he sees this month’s loan to Bern as positive for him personally; his self-confidence is still intact, he just misses match training. It’s still hard to digest that the SCB was so badly defeated by the HCD with a score of 0:7. “That’s difficult,” says Maurer.
Or as captain Simon Moser says: “It is unacceptable that we have fallen so far apart and unfair to our goalkeeper. Without a plan, we threw everything forward. The people of Davos were better in every way.” Both agree that a response is needed today against the struggling Lakers.
