The original idea of the Women’s Nations League followed that of the men. All teams must compete against opponents of approximately the same strength class. This was not the case with the national team, the A group with the best teams in Europe was in the wrong place despite the sensational victory against Sweden.
Certainly, the victory against the number 1 in the world is a real achievement. But the biggest win in years shouldn’t completely destroy the overall impression of this campaign; the goal difference of minus 12 speaks for itself.
Fortunately, the Nations League has a promotion and relegation system to correct the balance of power. You have to say thank you for the now certain descent.
Because even though every team always wants to compete with the best to get ahead, the persistent, sometimes brutal defeats in the autumn, together with all the confusion surrounding the fired coach Inka Grings, were counterproductive.
No one likes to lose all the time. Certainly not if the team actually has to grow together for big things at the European Championships at home in 2025. The relegation shows that Switzerland is simply not (yet) good enough to have a comparable status in Europe as the national men’s team. Although the victory over Sweden is worth all the honor, when viewed soberly, it also involved a lot of luck.
But the victory is the perfect starting signal for the necessary new beginning. Gain confidence with a new coach with test matches against sensible opponents, learn to dominate a match again and then create euphoria at the European Championship. And then get promoted again in the Nations League.
