The scene in the 58th minute heated emotions. Kloten’s star striker Axel Simic drives at full speed towards Zug’s Nico Gross and sends him into the boards with a violent check. The check was factually correct, but within striking distance of the gang. EVZ captain Jan Kovar has no understanding for this action, he grabs Simic and lets his fists do the talking.
The verdict of referees Marc Wiegand and Pascal Hungerbühler: Simic remains unpunished. Kovar, on the other hand, gets 2 minutes for excessive harshness. EVZ coach Dan Tangnes is certainly upset. Completely upset, he goes on a tirade of abuse – and is also given a 2-minute penalty for this. With two men left on the ice, Kloten managed to equalize 2-2 late through Tyler Morley – and Mika Henauer even scored a 3-2 away win for the Zürich Unterländer in extra time.
The game-turning scene sparked heated debate in the MySports studio. And the referees didn’t do a good job.
For referee expert Tobias Wehrli, the action should have resulted in a 5-minute penalty for a perimeter check. He accuses Simic of being ruthless: “That was extremely dangerous, Gross cannot defend himself.” Another expert, former player Timo Helbling, thinks differently: “It could be a penalty, but five minutes is too long.”
He feels that Gross is not behaving optimally in the scene. And missed the referees’ tact during Zug’s double penalty. Watch the check and the entire discussion in the video.
It was not only in this campaign that the people of Zug got into a fight with the referees. But Keanu Derungs’ Kloten equalizer made it 1-1 in the 37th minute. The goal was preceded by an obvious stumble by Zug’s Brian O’Neill by Kloten’s Dominik Diem – this should not have counted.
