It’s truly magical! After the giant slalom in Sölden (Austria) and the two runs on the Matterhorn, the first run in Beaver Creek (USA) also had to be canceled due to too much fresh snow. And the weather forecast for the coming days gives little hope that a downhill race can take place in Colorado on Saturday and the Super-G on Sunday.

For Team Canada, however, it is not the gloomy forecasts of the meteorologists that are lowering the mood. The “Crazy Canucks” had to tremble for the life of Broderick Thompson in recent days. The 29-year-old, who celebrated his greatest World Cup success to date in Beaver Creek two years ago with a third place in the Super-G, suffered a heavy fall during the second training session.

Austrian head coach Marko Pfeifer witnessed the drama surrounding the speed specialist from Whistler Mountain (Canada) from his position under the “Golden Eagle Jump”: “Broderick’s fall is one of the worst things I have ever seen!” Thompson jerked so violently during the compression after the “Golden Eagle” that he fell from a height of about three meters.

I’ve had problems jumping off a few times

He broke several ribs, several vertebrae and his shoulder blades and was put into an induced coma. The worst was to be expected. Everything was clear on Friday evening: Broderick’s condition is stable and he is responding again.

It is not yet possible to predict how long ninth place will have to take a break on the final Hahnenkamm descent in Kitzbühel (Austria). Before Thompson fully embraced ski racing at age 13, he was also an aspiring figure skater. And his former downhill coach Burkhard Schaffer does not rule out that the ice age from his childhood was his downfall in this case. “As a figure skater, Broderick has internalized the push-off on one leg. Because he kept accidentally jumping off the slopes like a figure skater, I saw several times that he was extremely crooked in the air.”
