Duel for the top scorer’s crown: Handball competition is looking for a new clipper king

The current number 1 on the goals list: David Knezevic from St. Otmar St. Gallen.

Mobiliar Insurance’s annual top scorer’s gala has been an example for Aleksander Spender (30) in handball in recent years: the Slovenian top scorer was honored twice in a row and was honored in the Kursaal in Bern. Donation now only plays with RTV Basel in the National League B. There he leads the top scorer list, but is no longer eligible for the honor of best scorer in handball Switzerland.

So the league is looking for a new Clipper king. At the top of the candidate list after 14 of the 27 qualifying matches is David Knezevic (22) from St. Otmar St. Gallen with 115 goals. The German-Serbian dual citizen came to St. Gallen from the German second division club Konstanz in the summer and is already finding his way in the new team as top scorer. “My good start in St. Gallen may come as a surprise to outsiders. “But I already knew what I could do,” he says confidently.

Knezevic cites two main reasons for his flood of goals: “My teammates, especially our playmaker Andrija Pendic, put me in the spotlight. And as the first seven-meter shooter you are automatically at the top of the scorers list.” The 2-meter man sees his greatest strength in throwing distance. Hits in the wide corner of the goal – preferably as a tap – are best for any defensive player, says Knezevic.

However, he follows the competition results more than the developments on the top scorers list. This is especially visible through the starting number of the top scorer. “That’s a cool idea that I’ve only seen from Switzerland.”

Duel Knezevic vs. Leopold

His first pursuer in the rankings is Noam Leopold (21). The left wing has scored 113 goals for Scout Winterthur so far, two fewer than Knezevic. The Knipser crown is not a priority for Leopold either: “Becoming top scorer is all well and good. But in the end, the championship title is all that matters.”

The fact that he is doing so well is not only due to his offensive but also due to his defensive improvements, says Leopold. “That’s the only way I can be on the field for 60 minutes.” This season he enjoys a lot of trust from scout coach Goran Cvetkovic and his teammates. “That gives me the necessary coolness at the end.”

Just like Knezevic, Leopold also scores almost 40 percent of his goals from seven meters. He does not want to reveal his best throws: “It is important to master as many variations as possible. But scoring goals on the counter-attack is a lot of fun.” Ultimately the ball just has to go into the goal. Or as Leopold says: “What moves is what counts.” (cmu)
