“Servette should focus on YB”: Man Mou! Mourinho does the Mourinho in Geneva

Jose Mourinho.

And boom, everyone has an opinion. Or you like “The Special One”. Or you think it’s bad. There is no such thing as something in the middle. That’s how he is. Everything or nothing. Preferably everything.

When Mourinho enters a room, it is filled with a very special aura. That was also the case on Wednesday evening when the Roma coach walked into the press room of the Stade de Genève. He welcomes the arrived journalists. There are more than twenty of them, mainly Italians. Mourinho hugs one warmly and briefly exchanges thoughts with him. It is the day before Servette-Roma – fifth match in Group G in the Europa League.

Controversial due to off-field behavior

“The best thing for Servette would be if they set up the second team and concentrate on Sunday’s match against YB,” Mourinho joked in French. A typical Mou moment. The star coach will be on the sidelines for the first time this European season on Thursday. The Portuguese received four match bans after losing the Europa League final. Because he – like the entire team – took out his frustration about the bankruptcy on referee Anthony Taylor. Only he overdid it and followed him to the underground parking garage and insulted him.

It was a move Mourinho has performed countless times over the past two decades. It’s his ugly side. The result is that it never gets boring with him. Name-calling in the media, criticism from referees or coaching feud. There are plenty of examples of that.

Feud with Arsenal legend

Such a scene takes place during his introduction as Chelsea’s new coach. Mourinho said the iconic line that earned him his famous nickname from then on: “Please don’t call me arrogant, but what I say is true. I am a Champions League winner and not just a coach. I think I’m a special (coach).”

The feud with Arsène Wenger (74) is also remembered with great pleasure. They clashed during Mourinho’s first term at Chelsea. But things really escalated during his second. Wenger initially claimed that many Premier League title contenders downplayed their title chances because they feared failure. ‘Am I afraid of failure? He is a specialist in failure. I don’t,” was Mou’s response.

There is a simple reason why Mourinho can seemingly afford himself anything. He is successful. Like no other. As a coach he has won 27 trophies. He has the trophies he won in European competitions tattooed on his upper right arm. Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. He did it because he could.

Stopover in Geneva

Mourinho has been coaching AS Roma for two and a half years. His contract expires in the summer. Will he renew? Roman journalists can imagine it. But it is uncertain. The coach himself just says that he loves the people of Rome and wants to give them a trophy.

Mourinho has had a score to settle with the Europa League since last summer. He wants to return to the final as soon as possible. Along the way, the Roma makes a stopover in Geneva. “Tomorrow we will only think about winning,” he says. So far, his stats in Switzerland are not particularly impressive. In total he visited this country three times with his clubs. He won only once. With Manchester United against YB (3:0; 2018/19). Now the second victory should follow. On a “disastrous pitch”, Mourinho notes after inspecting the pitch.
