Great moment in the premier class in Wankdorf! YB defeated Red Star Belgrade 2-0 to secure third place in the group. This means that the Bernese have booked their ticket for the 2024 Europa League round. This was made possible by a uniform team performance – and an excellent Lewin Blum (22).
The homegrown YB player scored Bern’s second goal of the evening. It is only his third goal for the yellow-black first team. After the final whistle, the young right back is rewarded with the Man of the Match trophy. “That’s a bit overwhelming for me,” he smiles in an interview with Blue. “It’s incredible to be able to win here at home. Very nice!”
About his first ever Champions League goal, Blum said: “It was always a dream.” A dream come true for the defender. Bern’s goal of European wintering has also been achieved. Blum: “Third place, Europa League, great. We can spend the winter in Europe and continue playing in the new year.”
YB coach Raphael Wicky (46) was also enthusiastic after the match: “It is of course fantastic: first qualification for the Champions League, then through to the next round.” But he notes: “We were a bit lucky today, we are aware of that.”
Nevertheless, joy – and pride – now prevails. “I’m proud of what we do here.” Wicky jokingly adds that he will “wake up better tomorrow” than after the defeat against FCZ (1:3) at the weekend. (sbe)
