YB opponent Red Star Belgrade in the middle: Serbian football descends into chaos again

How long will Israeli coach Barak Bakhar be in office at Red Star? This question has plagued Serbian football, at least since the gap with arch-enemy Partizan Belgrade in the league widened to six points. An unbearable no-go. Although Red Star managed to halve the deficit to three after the last round, the Israeli coach’s situation has not improved significantly.

Like YB, the team from Belgrade was aiming for third place. And if they lose in Bern, this goal will be missed.

Bakhar leads training sessions from the stands

The board recently supported the man who was in Israel with his family during the international break. Unlike fans and ultras, who at the beginning of the month, after a championship draw, took the coach and team hostage and made it clear to them that the results were unacceptable.

A major criticism is that Bakhar is often not on the field during training, but watches the units from above. “That can’t be right,” says Ognjen Vranjes, a former Red Star star player. “You don’t have that kind of relationship with your players. And that is the beginning of the end. The relationship must be three hundred percent!”

The Prime Minister is the Red Star’s biggest fan

Dissatisfaction or not – Red Star can, as usual, count on its most important supporter: Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic. He dutifully ensures that the club does not end up in a financial fiasco, as should actually be the case due to the transfer behavior. So you bring in the Korean Hwang, a washed-up star player from Olympiacos Piraeus, for 5.5 million euros, instead of relying on your own boys. One problem with Serbian football is that talent is often sold at the age of 18 because there are glaring financial holes everywhere. This way they can be filled – until the next hole opens.

Back to Vucic: he has the state-controlled telecommunications giant Telekom Srbija supporting Red Star. But not only that: he also allows Serbian football as a whole to share in state money. He ensured that state television RTS received the rights for the Super League by immediately having 200 million euros paid in advance, instead of first securing the amount with a bank guarantee as usual. With this approach he immediately threw the (known) rival bidders out of the race.

CEO Terzic’s sons end up in prison

And last but not least, there is Zvezdan Terzic, the scandal-ridden CEO of Red Star, who once served seven months in prison for embezzlement. His two sons ended up in prison for beating up the agent of national player Sergej Milinkovic-Savic (now playing for Neymar’s club Al-Hilal) with a gun. Terzic is said to have offered the advisor to protect him – for 200,000 francs. In response he was punched in the face. The sons then took revenge…

Serbia, Belgrade, Red Star. Pure wild west. Still.
