It is a very special kind of victory lap: Fabian Frei (34) is celebrated together with his daughters Mara and Lena by the 24,000 fans in the Joggeli. Frei has been the record player in the Super League since Sunday afternoon. He played no fewer than 422 games in the national competition. 64 of them for St. Gallen, Sunday’s opponent. The remaining 358 for FCB. If Frei hadn’t played for Mainz in the Bundesliga from 2015 to 2017, he would probably break the 500 mark quickly.
He and his teammates ensured that it would actually be a day of celebration, with at times brilliant performances against St. Gallen. Thanks to defense chief Frei, the Basel team kept a clean sheet for the first time this season.
