Kidnapping of fans in English football: Referee Rebecca Welch (39) refereed the men’s championship match between Birmingham City and Sheffield Wednesday (2:1) last Saturday.
Misogynistic chants directed at Welch are constantly heard from the audience. And this despite the fact that Birmingham had already called on people before kick-off to refrain from insults and the like towards the referee. There were verbal blunders in referee Welch’s last match.
In Birmingham, police are now taking action and taking two teenagers into custody on suspicion of breaching the peace. “We arrested two boys today for shouting misogynistic chants at the referee during Birmingham City’s home match at St Andrews,” a police spokesman said. They are currently in custody while the investigation is ongoing.
Birmingham City wrote in a statement that sexist comments had already been made against Welch in previous matches. “This will not be tolerated and anyone reporting such behavior will be asked to leave their seat by the stewards.” The club has now followed his words with action. (Gentlemen)
