Anyone who describes Heinz Lindner’s (33) year as turbulent underestimates things. Within a few months, the former Austrian national goalkeeper experienced emotional highs and devastating lows.
A few months after marrying his longtime partner Anna-Christina, Lindner became a father for the first time in February. But the young family is soon put to the test. In May, Lindner announced bad news: he had testicular cancer and had to undergo surgery.
“The diagnosis was a real shock,” says the Austrian in an interview in “Walliser Boten”. Fortunately, the cancer was discovered early. “Thank God it was discovered during surgery that the tumor had not yet spread,” says Lindner. The first major follow-up examination went well and the doctors found no abnormalities.
However, the goalkeeper is not yet considered recovered. After a cancer diagnosis, four years must pass without a recurrence to have this certainty.
Nevertheless, Lindner feels fit – just as fit as before his illness. “After the cancer operation, I was able to train fully again relatively quickly and without worries.” He celebrated his comeback in September in a friendly match. It was a “very nice feeling” to be back on the field with my teammates.
But here too, Heinz Lindner’s joy lasts only briefly. He has not been used since – because FC Sion does not even want to exchange a player’s license for him. He tolerates it with calmness: “I am not the type of person who causes a bad mood because of my unsatisfactory sports situation. I do my best in training. If you need me, I’m ready.” He could understand the coach’s decision.
However, the Linz resident must bury his big dream of participating with Austria in the European Championships in Germany in 2024. He was between the posts during the Austrians’ first two European Championship qualifying victories, but now he no longer has a place in the national team. ‘I’m a realist. I’m not even playing in the second highest Swiss league at the moment. There are good goalkeepers in Austria who deliver strong performances every week.”
Lindner’s career completely crashed – from a hundred to zero. But the Zion keeper does not give up hope: “I know it can go the other way just as quickly.”
