The green light from the Swiss sports parliament has arrived. Now the IOC will decide next week with which Olympic candidates it wants to enter into a serious dialogue about the candidacy for 2030 and 2034. You should know: the IOC allocates both dates at the same time in the summer. However, it is almost certain that the spot will already be reserved for Salt Lake City in 2034.
In addition to Switzerland, France and Sweden are also aiming for 2030. Due to the French candidacy, it is not yet clear when and where exactly the 2030 Olympic Games will be awarded – this should actually happen before the 2024 Summer Games in Paris. But the rules stipulate that the award ceremony may not take place in the country where the candidate is running.
The French Olympic Committee is actually planning the next guest appearance in the sports world before Paris 2024. The reason is the same as in Switzerland: the new IOC setup without gigantism. The French are participating in the race with a project in the two provinces of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.
Many locations will be included that were already Olympic at the 1992 Games in Albertville or are World Cup locations. The ice channel of La Plagne, the ski slopes of Méribel and Val d’Isère, the freestyle facilities in Tignes, the jumps in Courchevel, the cross-country ski trails of La Clusaz. Nice on the Mediterranean could be the opening ceremony, the Olympic village and the main media centre.
The French can count on support from the highest level. President Emmanuel Macron has assured that politicians will “provide all necessary means” to convince the IOC that they are a serious candidate.
In Sweden, politicians are also playing a much more aggressive role financially than in Switzerland in order to become an Olympic country again for the first time since 1912 in Stockholm (Summer Games). Last week the country’s government spoke out in favor of the implementation, and this week the city of Stockholm also decided to support it by 2030. The capital must be the center of the games.
Just like in Switzerland, there is no place for skating and just like here we are considering outsourcing this abroad. In Sweden, Norway would be an option. Latvia is also a partner for the ice rink competitions – although the track in Sigulda is not actually considered suitable for the large four-man bobsleds. When it comes to other disciplines, Sweden can count on proven locations. His for alpine skiing and Falun for the Nordic disciplines are traditional World Cup locations.
France, Sweden, Switzerland – there is currently no favorite, it will probably be a head-to-head race.
