About the 2030 Olympic Games in Switzerland: we must dare!

Olympic critic Patrick Magyar is right: when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) proposes something, you have to pay close attention. The IOC and its president Thomas Bach have not exactly acquired the reputation of a transparent and serious organization in recent years; they awarded the games to rogue states, dictatorships and fueled gigantism.

But now the IOC comes as a plea. The old trick no longer works. It is difficult to find a sensible democratic country that wants to host the Winter Olympics. The new version of the games that The Lord of the Rings brings us sound sensible. You want to rely on the existing infrastructure, use existing knowledge and keep your finances under control.

If the IOC is really serious about this, then these are three good reasons to say yes to the Olympic Games. Another thing: the IOC was recently rightly criticized when it took the Games to Russia, to China, and to the South Korean pampas. Or FIFA if it awards the World Cup to Qatar or if it wants to start the ball rolling in Saudi Arabia in eleven years’ time. But now we have the chance to do better. We can show what the games of the future should look like. It’s easy to always criticize from the second row. Now is the chance to do something. We must dare. Let’s get it done!
