Carole Howald occupies the first position in the Swiss team.

The Swiss curlers led by Skip Silvana Tirinzoni, who have already been designated as semi-finalists, achieved their eighth victory in their eighth match at the European Championship tournament in Aberdeen. They defeated Germany 8:6.

Four-time world champions Carole Howald, Selina Witschonke, Silvana Tirinzoni and Alina Pätz have not yet secured first place in the round robin despite their impeccable record. This requires a win on Thursday morning in the last preliminary round match against the convincing Italians led by skip Stefania Constantini, who have lost only one match so far.

It is still unclear who the Swiss will meet in the semi-finals. By winning the round robin they would be able to start the semi-finals as well as the final or the third place match with the not to be underestimated advantage of the last stone in the first end.

The Germans, led by Emira Abbes and threatened with relegation to the EM-B tournament, initially held up well. After four ends it was 3:3. From the 5th end onwards the Swiss finally took command.

Men’s team defeats the Czech Republic

The Swiss men’s team led by skip Yannick Schwaller took another step towards the semi-finals on Wednesday morning. The team from Geneva defeated the Czech Republic led by skip Lukas Klima 10:7 after being 2:5 behind. Once again Pablo Lachat, Sven Michel, Schwaller and Benoît Schwarz had to accept a completely failed ending. In the 4th end, three stones were stolen to make the score 2:5. But just like the last time they lost 8-4 to Germany, they recovered excellently from the accident. (SDA/dti)
