When the national team won European Championship qualification against Kosovo, the players’ joy after the match was limited. The joy is greater in the finance department of the House of Football. Because the European Championship qualification makes the cash register ring. And the SFV helps in financially difficult times.
The SFV reported a loss of 2.37 million francs for the 2022 financial year – despite 1.7 million francs in special income thanks to the World Cup in Qatar. The Finance Committee sounded the alarm and wrote in the annual report that cuts were “absolutely necessary”, because otherwise the association’s equity would be continuously and quickly used up in the coming years. In addition, the association is negotiating with a new main sponsor, because old partner Credit Suisse is disappearing.
Thanks to the European Championship qualification, the SFV now receives extraordinary income. And these should be seen. At the 2021 European Championship, UEFA distributed 9.25 million euros in registration fees for each participating country. There was a bonus of one million for each win in the preliminary round, 1.5 million for qualifying for the round of 16 and another 2.5 million for the quarter-finals. The most successful European Championship tournament of our national team also contributed a lot financially, as the SFV earned almost 15 million. million gross euros.
According to the SFV, after deducting all costs and premiums, the association had a profit of 7.22 million francs, of which approximately 3.5 million remained for the association. He also invested the money in women’s football, club development and talent promotion, among other things. More than 3.7 million went to the three divisions of the Swiss Football League (SFL), the First League and the Amateur League, the majority of which went to the SFL.
The premiums at next year’s EM in Germany will probably be at least as high as in 2021. What is already clear is that next summer’s tournament will be a great success, at least financially.
