No regular cockpit in Formula 1, but a new challenge during the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans: Mick Schumacher has clarified his sporting future for next year. The 24-year-old is moving to the World Endurance Championship, but will probably remain a reserve driver for the top Formula 1 team Mercedes, just like this season.

The French manufacturer Alpine announced on Wednesday that it has signed the son of Formula 1 record world champion Michael Schumacher (54) for next season and is aiming, among other things, for a start at the prestigious classic in Le Man with the German. “I missed racing a lot this year,” said Schumacher. “This is what I’ve loved since I was a kid and it was sometimes hard to watch the other drivers on the track.”

Test drives in October

Schumacher was promoted to permanent driver in Formula 1 for the 2021 season. He drove for the American team Haas for two years, but lost his cockpit to German veteran Nico Hülkenberg (36) for the 2023 season. The Mercedes team around record champion Lewis Hamilton (38) signed Schumacher as a replacement driver. Since then he has done important work, especially in the simulator, and was present in the paddock during the races.

In October, Schumacher completed test drives for Alpine in the French’s new hypercar in Jerez and was impressive. «We were very happy with his performance and the way he handled the team.
