Roger Federer is known for showing his feelings openly. Here he says goodbye to active sport at the Laver Cup in London.

Roger Federer (42) is built close to the water. During his active tennis career, the maestro was repeatedly shocked during acceptance speeches or after great successes on the court. What was previously only achieved through sporting success is now also achieved by a musician: the blind tenor Andrea Bocelli (65) invited Federer on stage at his concert at the Hallenstadion in Zurich on Monday evening and sang in honor of the tennis superstar.

Fans celebrate Federer for his tears

A reporter from Blick reader reports that Federer was asked on stage for the Italian opera singer’s final song; Bocelli introduced the Swiss as a “living legend”. Then it was completely silent in the hallway – Bocelli was shocked and shouted “Nessun dorma”.

The powerful aria by Giacomo Puccini (1858–1924), with Bocelli’s extraordinary voice, finished Federer: he had to wipe the tears from his eyes again and again until he could no longer control himself at the last bouquet and sobbed heartily. The podium cameras were constantly trained on him and the audience wildly praised the athlete for his openly shown vulnerability.

After the final note, the two superstars thanked each other and Andrea Bocelli escorted Roger Federer off the stage.

He sings and dances on all stages

After retiring from active tennis, Roger Federer’s new hobby seems to be paying quick visits to musician friends on the biggest stages in Switzerland.

In July, the twenty-time Grand Slam winner thrilled the fans of the band Coldplay at the Letzigrund in Zurich, albeit much less emotionally. Federer played and sang along to the song “Don’t Panic”! “Adventure of a lifetime,” the record-breaking athlete wrote on Instagram, referencing the Coldplay song “Adventure of a Lifetime.” (grb)
