It was THE banger at the start of this World Cup winter – in Sölden, Norwegian alpine pop star Lucas Braathen announced his immediate retirement at the age of 23. Main reason: The reigning winner of the overall Slalom World Cup has an argument with the Norwegian association over sponsorship.
Since then, many athletes and coaches in the ski circus have assumed that the Viking with the painted fingernails will make his comeback to Brazil next winter at the latest. This isn’t a far-fetched idea, as Braathen’s mother is Brazilian and he also lived in South America for a few years during his childhood after his parents separated. Will Lucas, whose middle name is Pinheiro, actually wear a yellow and green racing kit in the future?
As head of racing at ski company Atomic, Austrian Christian Höflehner has worked intensively with Braathen in recent years. And this contact was not broken even after the explosion in Sölden. “I still talk to Lucas a lot on the phone. On the one hand, because we get along very well in private. “I would also really like to keep him working at Atomic,” Höflehner reveals.
There are plenty of ideas for further collaboration. «Lucas embodies an incredible number of facets. Because he knows fashion very well, he was able to design clothes for us. We could also use him as a model. But I have not given up hope that he will one day return to the World Cup tour as a racing driver.”
However, Höflehner does not believe that Braathen’s comeback plans exist yet. «At the moment Lucas is not thinking about ski racing at all. During a telephone conversation he explained to me that he now wanted to visit all his relatives. But I hope he really gets the itch to race again once he puts the skis on again or sees the Alpine broadcasts on TV.
