Murat Yakin (49) is still national coach. With qualification for the European Championship 2024, the contract was extended until after the tournament in Germany. What happens next or that Yakin even has to leave before the euro is currently fully open.
“The problem is the relationship. You have to find out if both parties take a step towards each other. Then you can believe in a future, otherwise you wouldn’t,” says Valon Behrami (38), who played 83 games for Switzerland, at Blue about Yakin’s future with the national team.
Yakin showed his tactical and technical quality. «But sometimes the relationship is more difficult than technical and tactical matters. I think this is the right time to talk together – and then you have to decide.”
Behrami has also responded to potential successors. Urs Fischer (57) would be one of them. Last week the extremely successful collaboration of Fischer with Union Berlin came to an end. But Behrami immediately rejects the name.
“I don’t see Urs Fischer as a national coach,” was the clear opinion of the former midfielder. And that despite the fact that Fischer Union Berlin led from the 2nd Bundesliga to the Champions League in just five years?
Behrami explains: “I know him from the tactical side and I don’t see the future of this national team with his system. In the last two or three months he has lost so many games with Union Berlin and he hasn’t even changed the system.”
Fischer’s tactical plan clearly consists of a 3-5-2 system. “But for our team with our players, a 4-3-3 is perfect.”
Other names? Behrami also comments on Lucien Favre (66). And he is more positive: “His tactical ideas correspond to a modern team. He is also a leader for the relationship between the players.”
But there could also be a problem with French-speaking Switzerland. “The problem may be on the business side. Lucien Favre costs a lot of money. I don’t know if this is the right time for him or if he wants that. But technically I see it as a better solution than Urs Fischer.” (SME)
