He is still missing one title: Djokovic has a big goal for next year

Novak Djokovic wins his seventh ATP Finals title in Turin – a record.

With the clear victory in the ATP final against Jannik Sinner (22, ATP 4), Novak Djokovic (36) strengthened his supremacy in the tennis world. With this he trumps Roger Federer (42) and he now has seven titles at the end-of-year tournament.

At the same time, he celebrated his 71st ATP tournament victory on hard surfaces and drew level with the Maestro. And that’s not all: he is only the second player after Ken Rosewall (89, 1970 and 1973) to win at least 55 games in a season over the age of 35.

Can Djokovic win the Golden Slam?

Djokovic is a Grand Slam record winner, is the only tennis player to have won all Masters at least once and starts his 400th week as number 1 on Monday. And yet he has not yet won everything a tennis heart desires. One important title is still missing from his list of achievements: Olympic gold.

“It is definitely one of my main goals next year, along with the Grand Slams,” Djokovic said after his victory in Turin. In 2024, he will have the opportunity to become the first professional in men’s tennis to achieve the Golden Slam. The Serbian was also close in 2021, but lost to Daniil Medvedev (27, ATP 3) at the US Open – he already had the other titles in his pocket. Among women, only Steffi Graf (54) achieved this in 1988.

No Olympic final yet

However, next year a difficult tournament calendar awaits, especially because the documents change within a few weeks. At the end of May, the French Open will take place on clay (slow), followed by the fastest surface on the sacred grass of Wimbledon. The Olympic Games will be played on the grounds of Roland Garros and again on clay before moving to North America on the fast hard surface.

So far, Djokovic has won ‘only’ one Olympic medal; he won bronze in Beijing in 2008. At the time, he defeated James Blake in the third-place match; the American had eliminated Federer in the quarter-finals. In 2012 and 2021 he lost the bronze match, and in 2016 he ended up in the first round.

Djokovic’s first focus is on the final week of the Davis Cup, which starts on Wednesday. And if he wins with Serbia, he will have set another record: only the German Michael Stich (55) managed to win the ATP Finals and the Davis Cup in a row in 1993. (ch)
