The European Championship qualification has been completed. We are going to the European Championships – thanks to the support of Romania. And after consistent qualifying.

Will there now be a final lottery in Bucharest? Not at all. There is a lot at stake for the national team on Tuesday. If she wins, she will overtake Romania and end up in Pot 2 at the draw on December 2 in Hamburg. If she loses, she will remain second in the group and end up in Pot 4. Then there is a threat of a hammer group at the European Championships. For example with France, Denmark and the Netherlands. Or England, Turkiye and Croatia.

“It doesn’t matter which pot we are in”

Nati coach Murat Yakin doesn’t care much about this. “It is not that important which pot we are in. We will take it as it comes, because at the European Championship we can beat anyone.” A steep statement. After only two wins in their last seven games (both against Andorra) and five draws against opponents that do not belong to the European elite. But Yakin doesn’t care at this point. “I’m happy that we qualified. That’s the most important thing and it’s deserved.”

Yakin has achieved another goal during his time as national coach. The reward: his contract with the SFV is extended until after the tournament in Germany. But the development of the team is downwards and the match against Kosovo does not bring any change.

Yakin sees it differently and seems somewhat irritated after the sometimes harsh criticism leveled at him in recent weeks: “We have already qualified for the final round, which has probably never happened before. But maybe I should apologize that we didn’t qualify in the sixth round.”

And yet: if the national team had easily won the easy group, they would have even ended up in pot 1 in the draw. Then – from now on – a group with Albania, Scotland and Slovakia would have been possible.
