Stefan Bellmont (34) is just two wins away from participating in the main field of the Darts World Cup. He would be the first Swiss ever. But it remains the subjunctive mood, “Belli” fails in the semi-finals of the qualification.

The Zug player played strongly in his first five games, winning them 6:1, 6:4, 6:3, 6:1 and 6:4. In the penultimate round he had to admit defeat against the Dutchman Wesley Plaisier (33) 3:6. Still, the number 137 in the world is happy with his performance. “It was great,” he told Blick.

However, he cannot deny a certain disappointment: “It took me a while to process it. Of course it’s a shame if you know that not much was missing.” On the return journey on Saturday evening, he already enjoyed what he had achieved and did not mourn what he had missed. “We don’t know if we would have won the final at all.”

Bellmont continues on Sunday in Switzerland, where he will be a guest at a junior tournament. “Now I’m just looking forward to it. I can really live with how it turned out.”

Frenchman makes history

Bellmont can be absolutely satisfied with what he has achieved in Klakar (De). He made it to the top four out of 100 participants – he was never this good in his three previous participations. The World Cup ticket was ultimately secured by Thibault Tricole (34), who was the first Frenchman to go to the “Ally Pally” at the World Cup.

The second Swiss to qualify for the World Cup had to retire after his first match. Marcel Walpen (47), who was crowned Swiss champion about a month ago (final victory against Bellmont), narrowly lost to Ryan De Vreede (31, Ho) 5:6.

The World Cup starts on December 15, the final takes place on January 3. “Bully Boy” Michael Smith (33) will start the race as defending champion.
