He came, chased and won – just like last year. Walter Steiner (61) from Muri AG left everyone behind him during the Swiss championship yesterday. “I am happy that the trophy no longer has to just stand on the table,” says the newly crowned Jasskönig, who won the trophy last year. “The trophies certainly look good next to each other, and I even have room for more,” Steiner jokes.
The luck of the cards was clearly on his side. But perhaps preparation also contributed to the victory. «Yesterday I was with my parents. My father is 95 and my mother is 89 years old. I did a Zugerjass and trained with her,” says the Aargau resident, who works independently in the food packaging industry. At the final table he met Stephan Riedweg (50) from Ruswil LU, Niklaus Wendelspiess (68) from Gelterkinden BL and Ursula Hegner (60) from Oberurnen GL.
It almost didn’t happen. Famous jacketer Monika Kaelin (69) almost thwarted the Aargauer’s plans. «In the last pass before the grand final, Walter was my opponent. My partner and I beat him. “It makes me even more proud that I defeated the king,” says the singer and actress. For her it was only enough for 80th place.
Things got even worse for Monika Fasnacht (59). The grande dame of the Jass cards finished in 98th place, missing her target of finishing last. “Too bad. If you lose, that’s right,” she says with a wink. “It just wasn’t my yes day.” Marc Berthod (39) can call himself the best celebrity wrestler (54th place), and Nöldi Forrer (45) has to settle for 67th place. “It’s a shame,” says the wrestling legend. “I’m depressed and I’m going to hide and cry.”
Politics was also represented by Mathias Zopfi (39), Groenraad from Glarus. “I started well, excellent even, but then it went downhill.” He finished in the bottom third in 70th place. “It was fun, next year I’ll try my luck again.”
The live ticker to read:
This is what winners look like! Walter Steiner (61) from Muri AG wins the title as Swiss slide champion this year! Well deserved and congratulations!
Incredible! That is impossible! This victory will go down in history. He came to defend his title – and actually did so. Congratulations, Walti!
It’s certain: Walter Steiner will become the 7th Swiss slider champion!
Fun fact: The game leader at the table is none other than Walter Steiner’s brother! “However, I can assure you that everything is going well,” says Fredi Steiner (57).
The results of the third pass: Niklaus and Walter get 119 points, 38 go to Stephan and Ursula.
Niklaus and Walter have 104 points, Stephan and Ursula 53. There are still two games to go and anything can happen. The fact is: Walter Steiner is in pole position.
We’re starting to get nervous here at the Casino Theater Zug. Are we actually crowning Walter Steiner slide champion for the second time in a row today? We’ll know more in a few minutes. We still have three laps to go in this final passage.
A bitter setback for our woman in the group. Stephan and Ursula had to make very weak trumps. A small preliminary decision in favor of Walter Steiner?
Stephan and Ursula get 69 points, Niklaus and Walter 88.
The final and most important round is underway.
Exciting premise: theoretically, only Walter or Ursula can win. So it will either be the reigning pusher champion, or a woman – so far we’ve only had one pusher queen!
