Everton FC will be deducted ten points in the Premier League for breaching the competition’s ‘Financial Fair Play’. This is the biggest points deduction in Premier League history.
The penalty drops the club back to the penultimate place – two points below the non-relegation places. The Toffees deny wrongdoing, consider the sports penalty to be disproportionate and inappropriate for an accounting matter and have told the league an appeal will be lodged. The club says it is ‘shocked and disappointed’.
Leeds, Leicester and Burnley have also written to Everton’s owners saying they plan to sue for damages if found guilty. All three clubs have been relegated in the past two seasons, with Everton narrowly escaping each time. The Everton case was referred to an independent commission after examining financial documents from the previous season (2021/2022). Last year, Burnley and Leeds United wrote a letter to the Premier League asking whether Everton had broken the rules.
Under Premier League rules, clubs are allowed to make a maximum loss of £105 million over a three-year period. Clubs that violate profitability and sustainability rules may be subject to fines or points deductions. (SDA)
