At least 33 police officers and 24 football fans were injured during the serious riots surrounding the European Championship qualifying match between Bulgaria and Hungary (2:2). The Bulgarian authorities said this to the AFP news agency on Friday morning. The game had already been classified in advance as a ‘risk game’ and was played behind closed doors.
According to police, more than 4,000 fans still gathered in front of the National Stadium in Sofia, loudly protesting against the criticized federation president Borislaw Mikhailov. Violent clashes broke out after supporters threw smoke bombs, paving stones and beer bottles at police. The police responded with water cannons.
“24 injured people were examined, including seven who were taken to hospital with head injuries, broken legs and arms, and many who were pepper-sprayed,” a spokeswoman for the emergency center told AFP. Some police officers were “seriously injured and are in hospital,” Stefan Ivanov, deputy chief of Sofia police, said at a news conference.
The match was originally going to take place in Plovdiv – also without fans in the stadium. However, authorities in the southern Bulgarian city have withdrawn their permission to organize the meeting. The decisive factor for this was apparently the expected riots by violent hooligans.
The Bulgarian national team last qualified for a major tournament in 2004. Hungary secured participation in the European Championship in Germany with a 2-2 draw. (AFP)
