This week the qualifying campaign for the 2024 European Championship enters the final phase. The starting position before the final matches varies greatly by country. While the Spanish, Scots (both Group A), French (Group B), English (Group C), Turks (Group D), Belgians, Austrians (Group F) and Portuguese (Group J) have all already qualified and are in their final match play games If you just have to play it confidently, for others it is still about everything.
For example, for reigning European champions Italy. An exciting duel for second place behind group winner England is looming in Group C. Ukraine is currently three points ahead of Italy with one more match. North Macedonia, three points behind Italy, also has excellent chances.
Tough: There will be two more decisive direct matches for Italy in the remaining matches. The North Macedonians, who have already deprived Italy of participation in the 2022 World Cup, await Friday. And on Monday, Italy will play against Ukraine in Leverkusen. There may then be a real finalissima for the last European Championship ticket in the group.
There are also signs of a photo finish in Group D. Turkey has already won the group, but the Welsh and Croats, who are level on points, are still battling each other for the second European Championship ticket. However, Wales are in a better position compared to Croatia due to their performance in the direct match (1:1, 2:1). The World Cup semi-finalists are therefore dependent on the support of Turkey and Armenia, Wales’ last two opponents. At the same time, Modric, Kramaric and Co. also need strong nerves to score important points against Latvia and Armenia.
In Group E, the qualification of leader Albania is only a formality. Behind them, star striker Robert Lewandowski is threatening a huge disappointment for Poland. The Czechs are one point ahead of Poland in second place with one match less. But even if Switzerland’s 2016 European Championship round with sixteen opponents wins the direct match on Friday, the Czech Republic can still book a ticket on its own with a victory against Moldova three days later.
But there is still hope for the unlucky third parties to participate in the European Championship. In March 2024, three more European Championship tickets will be awarded via play-offs via the Nations League. (men/sbe)
