“He leaves as a friend”: Urs Fischer and Union go their separate ways

Urs Fischer is no longer the coach of Union Berlin. What German media reported on Wednesday morning was officially confirmed by the club shortly afterwards. Those responsible and the Swiss trainer agreed in a conversation to end the collaboration. As “Bild” writes, Union manager Oliver Ruhnert (51) announced Fischer’s farewell to the team at 9:20 am.

Last weekend’s 4-0 defeat against Leverkusen was the 14th game without a win in a row, of which 13 were lost. In the Bundesliga, the Champions League participant slid to the bottom of the table. Assistant coach Markus Hoffmann (51) also leaves the club with Fischer. U19 coach Marco Grote (51) will now take over on an interim basis. He is assisted by Marie-Louise Eta (32), she is the first woman in Germany to become assistant coach of a men’s football team.

“His personality and his successful work have shaped our club in recent years and opened up many new opportunities for us,” explains union chairman Dirk Zingler (59). “Together we have now come to the conclusion that it is now time to take a different path. (…) However painful this separation is, Urs Fischer leaves as a friend who will always be welcomed by us with open arms.”

Fischer himself also sends parting words to the club. He says: “We tried a lot, the team contributed a lot, but it didn’t yield any results. I am very grateful for the trust I have always felt here. Still, it feels good when a change happens now: sometimes a different face, a different way of addressing a team, helps get development going.

From the 2nd Bundesliga to the Champions League

In recent years, Fischer wrote a little football fairy tale with Union Berlin. He led the East Berlin club from the 2nd Bundesliga to the Champions League and established the Iron Men at the expanded top level of German football. With his shirt sleeve style, Fischer won the hearts of the fans in Köpenick. He was assured of the support of the fans until the end and they also applauded their coach after the defeat against Leverkusen last weekend.

Fischer now for the national team?

Fischer is certainly not in danger of a career break. Rumors of new challenges immediately arise. He enjoys an excellent reputation in the Bundesliga. At BVB for example – there are already jokes online. Coach Edin Terzic does not seem to be above all doubts, after the loss of the championship title last season and the mixed performances in recent weeks. Or perhaps the Swiss Football Association?
