At the same time, he also spends his free time hanging out with his circle of friends, as he has now admitted in an interview with ‘The Times’: ‘I think I was drunk twelve nights out of fourteen in the last two weeks. . It’s been crazy since I got back to Cardiff.” But he doesn’t drink alcohol during the season, one drink at most, says the 2018 Tour de France winner.

He attributes the drinking pleasure of recent days to the British and Australian mentality, “a culture of just going out and getting drunk at a young age.” Yet he observes more moderate drinking behavior among his younger colleagues. For twelve months he observes how all physical measurements are taken and how they are worked on. Thomas takes a very different approach. For him, alcohol is part of his social life.

Contract continues for another year

However, during pre-season preparation he behaves as professionally as his competitors. In the meantime, he has also followed the recent changes in diet: “Things have really changed in the past two years. We still do a few low carb rides, but now I fuel up a lot more while riding. After that I am no longer as hungry and I eat less. When you drive, your metabolism works and you only burn weight. That’s the new way of thinking and it worked.”
