Swiss football history will be written on Thursday: Esther Staubli will become the first female referee to officiate a men’s European Championship qualifier.
The 44-year-old from Bern will referee the match between Azerbaijan and Sweden (6 p.m.) in Baku. The Swiss Football Association (SFV) is “extremely pleased with this vote of confidence from UEFA”.
In the match between third place (Sweden) and fourth place in Group F, the entire referee team consists of Swiss officials. Jonas Erni and her long-time assistant Susanne Küng will act as linesmen, while Mirel Turkes will be the fourth official. Lukas Fähndrich and Lionel Tschudi are also on the VAR screens.
Staubli made her debut in the Super League in September 2021 in the match between FC Luzern and GC (1:1). Also this season, the trained teacher has played five matches in the top Swiss league so far. (ch)
