In the Champions League, Union can end their run of defeats in midweek. “A different mentality is needed”

Coach Urs Fischer (57), long seen as untouchable as the mastermind behind the fairytale march from the 2nd Bundesliga to the Champions League, seems increasingly dismayed. After the Leverkusen blow, he was clearly critical of his team’s attitude. “When you play in a relegation battle, you need a different body language, a different mentality,” he makes unmistakably clear.

Captain Christopher Trimmel (36) also sticks his finger in the wound. And agrees with his coach that a lot has to change if he wants to get back on track. ‘We have suffered so many defeats. We have to improve in many areas, otherwise it will be difficult to stay in the competition.”

The fans support Fischer

A week ago, club chairman Dirk Zingler (59) supported his Swiss trainer. They are convinced that Fischer can solve this “difficult task”. And even after the most recent defeat, he confirms that he feels supported by the club management: “I recognize the confidence, the club management has made itself clear.”

And yet Fischer adds: “I know this is not a job guarantee. The situation is constantly being reassessed.” After all, he is sure of the support of the fans. After the defeat against the Werkself they cheer for Fischer. He thinks it’s useful. “Of course that helps. Not only for me, but also for the staff and the team, when you enjoy the support of the fans, even when things are really bad. This is a point that can help you get back on track.”

But how long will it take before the wind finally changes? If Union loses three more times, the Iron Men will equal Greuther Fürth’s negative record from the penultimate 2021/22 season with twelve Bundesliga defeats in a row. Will the club management let it get to this point? (sbe)
