The conflict in the Middle East does not stop at the Swiss sports scene: at the World Championships in epee fencing in Gümligen near Bern, there will be a duel between the Egyptian Mahmoud Mohsen (28) and the Israeli Daniel Fridman (27).
Instead of accepting his opponent’s congratulations after winning the fight, Mohsen refuses to give him the customary handshake. A scandal that Israeli Fridman also complained about to the referee – but without consequences.
“Our coach Mahmoud Mohsen is committed to our values and beliefs,” his fencing club from Cairo wrote on Instagram. “He refused to shake hands after the beautiful 5-0 victory. We will never recognize any country other than Palestine.” Egypt officially recognized Israel as a state with the 1979 peace treaty. However, this position is considered unpopular among parts of the Muslim country’s population.
The scandal plays no role in sporting terms: the Egyptian Mohsen is 114th, the Isareli Fridman 213. The Swiss Lucas Malcotti (28) wins.
