Starting gun for the ATP final: Will Djokovic now set the next Federer record?

In Turin he is being hunted by the big one: Novak Djokovic.

At the age of 36, Novak Djokovic is the benchmark in the tennis circus. The Serbian has not lost a match since Wimbledon and recently won the Masters in Paris-Bercy for the seventh time. Overall, his record this year is impressive: 51 wins and only five losses.

So it is logical that the praise is currently pouring in for the Grand Slam record winner. “I have never seen a player who is in such good physical shape at this age,” says famous tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou (53). Alexander Zverev (26) told “Bild am Sonntag” the same: “He looks like he is 25.”

The German also believes that Djokovic will continue to play like this in the coming years and race from title to title. He was able to win two more this year: the Davis Cup and the ATP Finals. Djokovic has already triumphed six times at the tournament for the best eight tennis players of the year, meaning he currently shares the record with Roger Federer (42).

Who can stop Djokovic?

But now he’s aiming for the single record. The world number 1 starts in Turin as a top favorite and on Sunday evening he will compete with Holger Rune (20, ATP 8). Last week he played against the Dane in the quarter-finals in Paris, where he triumphed in three hard-fought sets.

Djokovic’s group also includes Jannik Sinner (22, ATP 4) and Stefanos Tsitsipas (25, ATP 6). These two will compete in the opening match on Sunday afternoon. They and the four stars of the second group (Medvedev, Rublev, Alcaraz and Zverev) all have the same goal: to prevent Djokovic from winning his seventh title. (ch)
