Raphael Dwamena has passed away at the age of 28.

Shocking news from Albania: Ex-football professional Raphael Dwamena (†28), who played for FC Zürich in Switzerland from 2017 to 2018, has died at the age of 28.

The death occurred under tragic circumstances. The striker, who played for the Albanian club KF Egnatia, collapsed in the 24th minute during his club’s match on Saturday and remained motionless.

Players from both teams administered first aid and a short time later Dwamena was transported to a nearby hospital. Shortly afterwards the news came that the ex-striker had not survived the incident.

Led the FCZ to the Super League

Dwamena shot FC Zurich into the Super League in 2017 with his goals. In 18 games in the promotion season he scored twelve goals and six assists. The following season he was also able to shine in the top Swiss league, with nine goals and eight assists in 33 games.

“FC Zurich was shocked and dismayed to receive news from Albania that former striker Raphael Dwamena collapsed and died during a KF Egnatia championship match on Saturday, November 11,” the club wrote.

Thanks to his strong performances at FCZ, Dwamena attracted interest, but a move to Premier League club Brighton fell through as the English club withdrew at the last minute due to Dwamena’s health problems.

The striker had a defibrillator inserted in 2020 due to his problems, but had it removed again in 2022. At the time he played in the 2nd Interregional League for the BSC Old Boys.

Although doctors advised him against returning to professional football due to his heart problems, according to ‘NZZ’, the striker moved to KF Egnatia in Albania after his adventure with the Old Boys in January 2023. (par)
