The New Jersey Devils lose for the second time in a row in the NHL, for the third time in the last four games. In the 2:4 home win against the Washington Capitals, Timo Meier was again among the scorers.
The Devils, returning to Newark after a four-game road trip, trailed 3-0 after just 27 minutes. Goalkeeper Vitek Vanecek had to make way for his Bern substitute Akira Schmid in the 11th minute, after conceding two goals within 15 seconds. Washington has only made five shots on goal at this point.
Schmid does a better job than the Czech with twenty saves and capitulates only once when the Capitals made it an empty goal in the 59th minute at 4-2. When Dawson Mercer made it 3-2 in the 50th minute, the Emmentaler even provided an assist, his second of the season.
Previously, it was Timo Meier who woke up his team in the 47th minute with his fourth goal of the current season, the second in two games. “You have to play sixty minutes, we didn’t do that. You can earn self-confidence by working hard, so you have to go out and just work,” said the Appenzeller after the sixth defeat in the 13th game of the season.
For the Devils, captain Nico Hischier and top scorer Jack Hughes will once again be sorely missed. Without their two best centers injured, New Jersey lacks the necessary creativity in the offensive game. (SDA)
