National coach Julian Nagelsmann (36) promises former goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (37) a return to the national team in March. “We all hope that he plays extremely consistently until the next international break, then the signs will look very different again,” Nagelsmann said on Friday when he nominated his team for the matches against Turkey (November 18) and in Austria (November 21).
After a long injury break, Neuer is showing strong performances again at Bayern Munich, but as agreed he is not there yet. “That was a joint decision. I have had very good contact with Manuel in recent months; he informed me about every little step in his development, even though he has only made progress in the weight room,” said Nagelsmann. “We had a lot of phone calls, a lot of WhatsApp contacts and we kept exchanging ideas.”
Ultimately, it is appropriate to protect the 37-year-old. “There are clear statistics that can be proven after such a serious injury. We are all very happy that Manu is back,” said Nagelsmann, but: “The first matches are very, very good – then it is clear that there is a small gap where there is a risk of muscle injuries.” (AFP/men)
