The Basel juniors around Adriano Onyegbule (l.) and Junior Zé excel in the Youth League.

Basel’s supporters will have to give up European football in their Joggeli this season. But in the neighboring athletics stadium St. Jakob you can see international matches – even if only of the U19 team. Thanks to winning the Swiss U18 Championship last season, they qualified for the Youth League, in a sense the Junior Champions League.

In this competition, FCB eliminated their Belgian contemporary KRC Genk two weeks ago with an aggregate score of 3-0 (1-0, 2-0). Mario Cantaluppi’s team thus secured a place in the next round – where a quality opponent awaits in Dinamo Zagreb. Dinamo’s excellent youth team consists of star players such as Luka Modric (Real), Mateo Kovacic (City) and Josko Gvardiol (City). A real endurance test for Basel’s juniors – but one that they once again mastered with confidence.

In front of 2,400 fans, including a handful of Dinamo ultras who traveled with them, the FCB chicks defeated the guests from Croatia 2-0. Adriano Onyegbule (17) and Roméo Beney (18) scored the goals in the first half. This puts the team from Basel in a good starting position for the second leg in Zagreb at the end of November. After the final whistle, the FCB talents and representatives of the Muttenzerkurve celebrate their third victory in their third international appearance of the season. (sbe)
