In just over 300 days, Zurich will become the center of the cycling world. To be precise: from September 21 to 29, 2024. “I’m happy that we can finally focus on the sport,” says Mario Fehr. The president of the canton of Zurich was clearly relieved at the kick-off of the big event.

No wonder that there were almost sixty calls from traders and other institutions. Almost all of them are off the table – three are still pending. Filippo Leutenegger (70), head of the school and sports department: “This is also about finding access options. But I am confident,” he says.

It is important that everything is arranged with the hospitals – including the children’s hospital. “That was a really tough nut to crack. We encountered resistance – also because we were not doing so well in terms of communication. We have to be self-critical.”

“Heavy, but not ultra heavy”

For the first time, the Cycling World Championships and the Paracycle events will be held together. 66 gold medals will be distributed over the nine days. “The fact that all races end on the Sechseläutenplatz in the middle of Zurich is special. We are sure that a major cycling festival will take place. The World Cup is a lighthouse project for the canton of Zurich. It will give a big boost to exercise on two wheels,” says Fehr.

The highlight comes on the last Sunday of the World Cup with the professional road race. Cycling star Stefan Küng knows that the 273.9 kilometers from Winterthur to the finish will be tough. The seven laps around Zurich in particular are “difficult, but not ultra-difficult” for him, he says after completing the route.
