Referee expert Urs Meier discovers a mistake in Basel’s home win: ‘FCB-Schmid should have seen red’

In the 2-0 defeat of the classification against Lucerne, goalkeeper Justin Hammel almost made a fatal mistake.

Many things were wrong in the 2-0 defeat of the Grasshoppers in Lucerne. A good example of this is the back pass to GC goalkeeper Justin Hammel in the 43rd minute when the score was 1-0 to Luzern.

Hammel initially hits the ball with his foot, but in the end manages to scrape it away with his hand on the goal line and thus prevent the provisional decision. But didn’t he break the rules in this scene? After all, the goalkeeper is not actually allowed to accept a back pass with the hand.

Referee expert Meier explains: That’s why Hammel was allowed to save the back pass with his hand(01:16)

Something special for referee expert Urs Meier: “It’s a back pass, he takes it in his hand, but he tries to play it with his foot first. This means: This results in a new action and he can clear the ball again. So continuing to play was the right decision.”

Wrong decision in favor of Basel?

However, Meier is not entirely satisfied with referee Urs Schnyder in FC Basel’s 2-1 win over Yverdon-Sport. There he gave FCB defender Dominik Schmid a red card for his handball in the 71st minute when the score was 1-0. Instead, the team from Basel can still achieve victory with eleven players after the equalizer from Vaudois.

Meier says: “For me, Schmid makes a clear movement towards the ball. It’s like a goalkeeper style.” So he tries to save the ball. He also doesn’t know whether the goalkeeper is behind him or not. For me it’s a clear destruction of a clear scoring opportunity. That would be a penalty and a red card.” (Gentlemen)
