Zero points from four games: FCB suffers from a promotion curse

In Western Switzerland, newly promoted Yverdon won 3-2 against Basel.
Michael WegmanDeputy Head of Football

Against Kriens from the Promotion League, FCB advanced to the quarter-finals with a narrow 1-0 win in the cup during the week. The debut of new coach Fabio Celestini was a success, but the bottom of the table has not yet lost its frustration. Celestini also knows that there is still a lot of work to be done. After the final whistle he spoke to the young Thierno Barry, who remained disappointed on the bench after the victory because he did not play. There is no room for selfishness.

Six reasons for FCB’s decline

“If you haven’t won for so long, not everyone can think about themselves,” says Celestini, who is saying goodbye to his football philosophy at FCB for the time being: neat football with a lot of ball possession. The fallen FCB needs immediate wins – one way or another.

We urgently need three points against promoted Yverdon, otherwise the effect of the trainer change might have evaporated before it started. Yverdon is not the biggest obstacle. But in the current constitution there are no small ones. In the four games against the three French newcomers Lausanne, SLO and Yverdon, FCB suffered only defeats. 1:2, 2:3, 0:3 and 0:3 are Basel’s poor promoted record.

Some feared that expanding the competition to twelve teams would mean a loss of quality.

Yverdon also has a new coach

Yverdon also has a new coach on the sidelines, Alessandro Mangiarratti. Unlike the dismissal of Heiko Vogel in Basel, there was no sporting reason for the divorce of Marco Schällibaum in French-speaking Switzerland. 16 points on the account – more than three times as many as FCB. Club bosses say the unpopular coaching change was about the future and not the present. It is more likely that the younger Mangiarratti can handle the project of “building a sustainable, profitable and attractive club, developing players and making a profit” than promotion coach Schällibaum.

At FCB, only the present matters at the moment.
