FCZ-Henriksen about first defeat: ‘By far the worst match of the season’

You haven’t heard that in a long time. What? FCZ coach Bo Henriksen congratulates the opponent’s coach on the victory after a match. “A very well-deserved victory for you,” the Dane praised Servette coach René Weiler and his team, who ended Zurich’s unbeaten status with a 2-0 victory in Letzigrund.

“It was by far the worst match of the season for us,” says Henriksen about the first defeat since FCZ lost the last match of last season at the end of May. Zurich then remained undefeated in 15 competitive matches from the start of the season in July.

FCZ without the usual energy and strength

First defeat in more than five months. A new feeling that takes some getting used to? “Ask me tomorrow how I feel, because I won’t sleep well,” says Henriksen, “but not because of the defeat itself, but because we didn’t play well. The strength and energy that usually characterize us was missing.”

It seemed almost predictable that the super series with the best start to the season in the club’s history could end against Servette. Despite the double burden, the Geneva team is in excellent form and has now won five times in a row in the competition. At the same time, the previous surprise leader from Zurich has been a bit weak lately. The 1-1 draw against promoted Stade-Lausanne-Ouchy was already a perceived defeat for the FCZ, then there was Knorz’s difficult victory in extra time in the cup over Bellinzona during the week. Even captain Yanick Brecher says that the first defeat has become clear: “The trend in the last few games has gone in the wrong direction.”

However, coach Henriksen doesn’t want to know anything about it. «I don’t see how this defeat could have been expected. We lost a football match, it’s not the end of the world. We all have bad days, it’s human. “We can be proud that we have not lost fifteen games,” said the Dane.

Henriksen defends himself against the fact that the absence of the two differently placed defenders Nikola Katic and Fabio Daprelà was of great importance. But he also has to admit that Geneva’s early goal might not have happened that way. “We have to solve this better. The early goal ruined our game plan.”

The big question now is: what does this first defeat do to the FCZ? Henriksen: “I don’t want to have to get used to losing. Next Sunday we have to make a comeback in Lugano.”
