On Tuesday evening, Gottéron and Biel met on the ice, with the Zeelanders winning 2-1 after extra time. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, the two teams battled it out for the services of Yannick Rathgeb (28), one of the most sought-after defenders on the market. Unlike the match, this time it was Christian Dubé who won. The Langenthaler will therefore leave Zealand at the end of the season and return to the FKB Arena, where he started his NL career.
“We spoke in the summer,” explains the Dragons’ sporting director and coach. “I took his temperature and told him I was interested in getting him back. He told me to wait.”
After about twenty games in the National League, Rathgeb finally made his decision: he signed for five seasons in Fribourg. “It wasn’t an easy decision,” the right-wing shooter explains. “On the one hand, I am very happy to be back in Fribourg, but on the other hand, it is not easy to leave Biel, where I like it very much.”
In recent weeks, the Nati defender has weighed the pros and cons between Biel’s offer and that of Fribourg. “I had to make a long-term decision because I signed for five years. I’ve thought about it a lot. Ultimately, I really liked the stability that has existed in Friborg for a while.”
Dubé was opportunistic on the ice and he is also opportunistic with the pen. “We got along well when he first got involved and I liked his attitude,” says the trainer and (current) manager. “He is a good defender with a strong character. He is an attacking defender and you don’t come across that profile very often. That’s why we did everything we could to find common ground.”
Speaking of strong character: Rathgeb will meet Chris DiDomenico in Gottéron. Last season, when the Canadian was still storming Bern, they had a number of hot duels. The most striking? When the two emotional boys first fought on the ice and then had another argument in the “bear pit” of the PostFinance Arena in front of the locker room.
When asked about this, Rathgeb laughs. The lawyer suspected that the subject of ‘DiDo’ would come up sooner or later. “We’ll both have a beer and talk about it and everything will be fine,” he says. “Throughout my career there were a lot of guys that I didn’t have an affinity with before I played with them. But when you play together, everything goes well. I have no personal problems with him.” And he adds with a laugh, “But be careful, that doesn’t mean I’ll be nice to him until the end of this season.”
