Bundesliga club FSV Mainz 05 is saying goodbye to attacking player Anwar El Ghazi (28) with immediate effect. The Rheinhessen informed on Friday evening about the termination of the contractual relationship. The club responds “to the player’s statements and messages on social media”. El Ghazi denied, among other things, Israel’s right to exist.
Before the contract was terminated, the Koblenz Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation against the Dutchman on Friday. The Public Prosecution Service confirms this in response to a SID request.
“According to our assessment, there is initially a suspicion against the accused of disturbing public peace by endorsing crimes in combination with incitement to hatred by spreading content,” the Koblenz Public Prosecutor’s Office said.
Sports director Christian Heidel from Mainz has recently become increasingly annoyed by the El Ghazi case. “I’m not going to explain it further. I think everyone has now realized that this has nothing to do with football or sports anymore. (…) This is a case that has never happened before in Mainz 05 and I deeply regret that something like this could happen.”
After his deportation, the Dutch-Moroccan dual national responded with a message on social media. “The loss of my livelihood is nothing compared to the hell that the innocent and vulnerable in Gaza are subjected to,” El Ghazi said.
The attacker only moved to the bottom of the Bundesliga on a free transfer at the end of September. He was unable to cope with the sporting crisis, but instead caused further problems for the Hessians with commotion off the field. (AFP/sbe)
