Sao Paulo: Transfer window closed, rumors and anger: Sprint king Verstappen: “Hate this mini show!”

Max Verstappen can approach the Brazilian GP relaxed. The only thing that bothers him is the sprint race.
Roger Benoit from São Paulo

On Friday, the 20 drivers in the only Formula 1 practice (from 3:30 PM CET) have just 60 minutes to prepare for qualifying for the Brazilian GP on the 4,309 km long mountain and valley course. The 20th pile hunt starts at 7:00 PM CET (TV live).

As always, the sprint qualifying and the race will take place on Saturday.

Verstappen top – Leclerc flop

Verstappen is trying to secure his eleventh best starting position in 2023 at an altitude of 750 meters. And if the Dutchman succeeds, he will also be the clear favorite on Sunday from 6 p.m. (TV live). Red Bull’s omnivore converted his last 14 pole positions into a victory.

Charles Leclerc (26) is completely different. Of his 23 training victories to date, only four ended on the top podium. This year, the Monegasse has never been able to celebrate after four pole positions. Already 30 races have passed since his last GP victory in Spielberg in 2022. Leclerc, once considered a future world champion, has dropped to seventh in the World Cup. The trend is hardly upward.

Sargeant remains – Toyota comeback?

Because Aston Martin-Mercedes has now confirmed the Brazilian Felipe Drugovich (23) as a replacement driver for 2024, it is clear: Williams-Mercedes continues to rely on the American driver Logan Sargeant (22, one World Cup point in Austin) and thus concludes the deal transfer window.

Aston Martin has secured Honda engines for 2026. Red Bull is building its own propulsion system together with Ford. And apparently Formula 1 fever has broken out again in Japan. And Toyota is said to be planning a comeback for the ‘new’ Formula 1 after its departure at the end of 2009 – with McLaren. But not until 2027 at the earliest because they missed the 2026 registration deadline.

Final in Abu Dhabi in danger?

With three races to go, the rumor mill is starting to turn again. Even the final on November 26 in Abu Dhabi would be in jeopardy. As a result of the conflict in the Middle East, there is fear of terrorist attacks throughout the Arab region. The Formula 1 management (FOM) reassures: “The race continues!”

However, the organizer wants to allow fewer spectators on the circuit. And enable the highest level of security. Airlines are even considering not flying their planes to Abu Dhabi during the 22nd and final World Cup race.
