Especially for a “fantastic audience”: Medvedev raises the middle finger in Paris

Daniil Medvedev clashes with the crowd as he leaves Paris-Bercy.

After almost three hours, the tournament in Paris-Bercy is over for Daniil Medvedev. It is a frustrating three hours that the Russian also spends arguing with the Parisian crowd during his defeat to Dimitrov.

“I’m not going to continue playing as long as they’re blowing the whistle,” he told the referee toward the end of the second set. Medvedev threw his racket on the ground in frustration, and the crowd responded with a whistle concert. “The longer you pause, the more it irritates her,” the referee wants to encourage him to continue playing. “You’re stupid! If they don’t whistle, I’ll keep playing!” Medvedev remained stubborn.

Ironic explanation for middle finger gesture

In the end, Medvedev kept playing. “I’m playing, guys. “But shut up now, okay?”, the next provocation immediately followed. And when the match was lost after a big fight – Medvedev gave up a 5-2 lead in the decisive set – he gave the fans several times the middle finger as he walked out of the hall.

At the press conference afterwards, he explains ironically: “Middle finger? No, I just looked at my nails. Why should I give this fantastic French audience the middle finger?” For Medvedev, the audience in Paris-Bercy is notorious for their ‘weird’ fan behavior. “Because of this crowd, not everyone likes to play here. I played much better in Bercy when there was no one there. ” The Russian won the 2020 Corona edition – without whistles, but also without cheering from the audience. Would the Parisian crowd still cheer for him if he wins another tournament in the future? (dti)
