In 2017, Lara Gut-Behrami was seriously injured while participating in the combined slalom of the World Championships. Yet she often trains for slalom. Why?

It was the worst moment of her career: on February 10, 2017, Lara Gut-Behrami tore her cruciate ligament during a slalom training. She lost touch, was almost desperate, was written off and sometimes even laughed at. That is a thing of the past: Gut-Behrami persevered, won World Cup and Olympic gold and is still world-class at the age of 32, as she proved during her victory in the giant slalom in Sölden. How did she do that? Partly thanks to the slalom training!

This is surprising at first glance; After all, Gut-Behrami would have reason enough never to venture into a forest of poles again. She does it anyway. “The slalom helps me because in this discipline I can build up the timing for the giant slalom. You have much less time, you have to be very precise – I need the slalom,” she says.

Frehsner’s wish is not granted

Gut-Behrami is no longer afraid to dance through the poles. How quickly does she do it? No one knows for sure. Legendary trainer Karl Frehsner (84) says: “Lara can do anything. I would like her to also play at the World Slalom Championships.”

She waves him goodbye. Firstly, slalom has become increasingly specialized: if you don’t invest a lot of time in it, you have no chance of top placements. This is exactly what Gut-Behrami needs to be able to compete against Mikaela Shiffrin (28, USA) in the overall World Cup in the long run.

She herself has no illusions after the 100 points in Sölden: “Without winning I wouldn’t have doubted everything. But just because I won doesn’t mean I get the big crystal ball.”

“Have different values in life”

Last winter, Gut-Behrami won the Super-G World Cup, finished second overall in the giant slalom and sixth in the downhill. Nevertheless, in the overall World Cup she was almost 1000 points behind high-flyer Shiffrin (1217:2206).

And now? The key is to get through the winter healthy and fit, she says. “At the age of 18 it made a huge difference whether I had one win more or less. At 32, that is no longer the case, even though I still give it my all. I have different values in life – that helps me to approach things in a more relaxed way.”
