SCB coach Jussi Tapola had a clear opinion and expressed it angrily to the officials: the match should have been stopped when a penalty was called against a Bernese player and captain Simon Moser threw the puck out of the air.
Ex-referee and linesman Nadir Mandioni (49) shared the same opinion as the successful Finnish coach in his analysis on MySports. “The whistle should have been blown,” the expert said.
The crucial question in reaching the verdict was: to check or not to check? There was no question that Moser had touched the puck. But according to the rules, that alone is not enough to stop play if a penalty is delayed. Did Moser have control of the puck? Yes, says Mandioni. “Simon Moser deliberately removed the window.”
However, the referees assessed the scene differently. The match continued and the Zurich team played to its numerical advantage with patience rarely seen. The interruption only came when defender Mikko Lehtonen put the puck into the Bernese goal and made it 2-0. A game-changing goal, as it turned out. Ultimately, the ZSC Lions won 4-1 thanks to two late goals. (sr)
