In the current season, Xherdan Shaqiri (32) played 28 games in Major League Soccer. The five goals he scored were not enough to qualify for the play-offs. Now Shaqiri could win a trophy other than the championship trophy.
The goal he scored against Montreal (3-0) in mid-July is one of twenty nominees for goal of the year. It was the 33rd minute when the star of the Swiss national team reached deep into his bag of tricks. Instead of shooting a free kick directly at goal, Shaqiri passed to Maren Haile-Selassie (24), who played the ball back to him. And then the Nati star took out his magical left foot and curled it into the crossbar from almost 25 yards to make it 3-0.
A dream goal that has rightly been nominated for Goal of the Year. Shaqiri’s competitors include Thiago Almada (22, Atlanta United), Jose Martinez (29, Philadelphia Union) and Federico Bernardeschi (29, Toronto FC). You can vote for Shaqiri here until November 6. (beer)
