In a completely surprising manner, Norwegian slalom champion Lucas Braathen (23) announced his retirement from the World Cup on Friday. He wants to be free – but that is simply not possible with the current structures in the ski circus. The dismissal, although accompanied by bitter tears, was a liberation for the young Norwegian. Now he addresses his fans again on Instagram. With emotional words and a video of a wild farewell party. «Thank you for the countless unforgettable moments we experienced together. It has been an honor to share both my failures and successes with you.”
The Norwegian didn’t celebrate just anywhere, but in one of the most legendary World Cup bars of all: “The Londoner” in Kitzbühel. From downhill legend Franz Klemm (69) in the 1970s to Streif record winner Didier Cuche (49) in the 2000s to Aleksander Aamodt Kilde (31) in January: a number of Streif conquerors have celebrated their triumph in the pub. Always including a beer shower and lots of schnapps.
“There’s no better place to celebrate my journey than here in legendary London!” Braathen continues. «I don’t just have my first memories of skiing in Kitzbühel. It is also the place where I was able to introduce myself at the World Cup.”
So now the circle is closed with the farewell party in Kitzbühel. And apparently the Norwegian-Brazilian dual nationality really hit the mark. At the end of the detailed post he writes: “If the Streif doesn’t finish you off, The Londoner will, as the saying goes. I can confirm it now: that is not an exaggeration.”
