Controversial scene in the Lausanne penalty area: Referee Meier allegedly awarded Basel a penalty

Referee Fedayi San has to make controversial decisions in the match between Lausanne and Basel.

FC Basel is astonished after the recent 3-0 defeat against Lausanne. It is already the fourth defeat in a row under FCB coach Heiko Vogel (47). It is slowly becoming difficult for the German to stay in office. But the match in the Stade de la Tuilière could have gone differently. Two referee decisions are worth talking about.

The first scene takes place shortly after half-time with the 1-0 score for Lausanne in the hosts’ penalty area. FCB midfielder Gabriel Sigua (18) accepts a pass from left back Dominik Schmid (25). As a result, Sigua tries to assert himself in a duel against defender Noë Dussenne (31), during which he falls to the ground. But the whistle of referee Fedayi San (40) remains silent.

“It would have been easy to whistle”

For Blick expert and former top referee Urs Meier (64) it was a bad decision: “It’s foul play, Dussenne is too late. He lunges and hits his opponent. It would therefore have been an easy decision to blow the whistle. Why wasn’t there a whistle? I can only imagine that Sigua was a bit too theatrical,” says Meier. Presumably there was already communication with the VAR before the final decision was made.

However, Meier shares the same opinion as San about the 61st minute foul by Basel’s new signing Renato Veiga (20) on Berkay Dabanli (33). Veiga hits his opponent on the head with his leg as he tries to clear the ball in the FCB penalty area. San then decides on a penalty with the help of VAR. Meier says: “In this case it is a simple assessment of the violation.” Veiga tried to save the ball. He hits Dabanli on the head, who didn’t misbehave. His head was not too low. So it is clearly malicious intent. “However, in this situation I would expect the referee to see the foul on the pitch. The ball is visible, it is an open field and not hidden in any way.
